RECEIVING GUESTS AND TAKING NAMES: HOSPITALITY AND BETRAYAL IN THE ODYSSEY

TIME:

December 14, 2017    7:00 PM

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

The next presentation in an on-going monthly series on the Great Books and the Catholic Liberal Arts.

"Receiving Guests and Taking Names" looks at an essential theme in Homer's poem of return and recognition: how we treat others reveals who we really are.

Looking in particular at Odysseus and how he behaves as a guest in good times and bad, we learn how this man "skilled in all ways of contending," this "wander'," "plunderer" and "trickster" learns to be worthy of the names "king," "father," and "husband".

The speaker: Stephen C. Córdova is the Latin instructor at Martin Saints Classical High School. With over twenty years of teaching in the Liberal Arts, he brings a lively speaking style and passion for ancient texts.

Light refreshments will be served after the talk.
