DESCRIPTION
Like Easter, the Christmas season lasts for forty days and culminates with the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary on February 2, traditionally called Candlemas in English-speaking countries. In celebration of this day, Schola Nova will present a candle-light concert drawing on the ancient texts of the Roman Rite for Candlemas which date back to the tenth century. The repertoire for this concert blends Old World classicism with the vigorous rhythms and harmonies of Latin America and the United States. Interspersed with the works of European masters Lassus and Clemens non Papa is the center-piece of the program, the Missa Ego Flos Campi by Mexican composer Juan Gutierrez de Padilla. Also, Schola Nova will present the world premiere of American composer Harold Boatrite's Ave Maria. Please join us as we witness the wedding of two hemispheres, bound in the venerable traditions of the Roman Rite.

SPEAKER/PERFORMER INFORMATION
Schola Nova is the resident instrumental and vocal ensemble of the International Institute for Culture. Founded in the autumn of 2002, the group is committed to the preservation and performance of the great patrimony of Western Music. Schola Nova is a chamber ensemble, blending voices and instruments in various combinations to achieve an intimacy modeled on the camerata of the early Italian Baroque. The group focuses on the music of this period, but also relies on the great treasury of Renaissance polyphony as well as works of the modern repertory. Like the Florentine Camerata of three centuries ago, Schola Nova is eager to perform new works which reflect the continuity of the Western musical tradition. LECTURE PREVIEW
