DESCRIPTION

This talk presents two great founders of monasticism: St. Basil and St. Benedict. As with many contrast between eastern and western Christianity, the two and their works are complimentary and, in fact, are seen in their full glory when set side by side. St. Basil, in his short and long rules, presents an outline of community life where the goal is "a life well-pleasing to God." This is acheived through "good order" understood as service to one's fellow man and contemplation of God's laws. The relationships between the monks are understood fraternally.
