The International Institute for Culture (IIC) offers the Europe Cultural Excursions Program, a unique opportunity to explore the rich Catholic heritage of Bavaria, Germany and its profound influence on faith, history, and culture. This program is designed for individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of Catholicism’s roots through a combination of engaging lectures and immersive excursions to significant historical and religious sites. Participants will discover the landscapes, traditions, and spirituality that have shaped Catholic Europe for centuries.
The program begins in Eichstätt, a historic center of Catholic learning and evangelization. Home to Germany’s only Catholic university, Eichstätt features landmarks like the Gothic Cathedral, which houses the relics of St. Willibald, and St. Walburga’s Benedictine Abbey. Excursions in the area include visits to the Prince Bishops’ fortress, Marian pilgrimage sites, and the former seminary in Freising, where Pope Benedict XVI taught. Participants also join in prayerful experiences, such as Vespers sung by Benedictine nuns, and attend lectures covering the early evangelization of Germany and the Church’s intellectual heritage.

The journey continues in southern Bavaria near Chiemsee, the “Bavarian Sea,” known for its ancient Benedictine monastery and King Ludwig’s opulent castle on Herreninsel. Excursions include visits to Marktl am Inn, the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI, and Altötting, a beloved Marian shrine. Cultural highlights include a cable car ride to an Alpine peak crowned with a cross and a visit to Hohenaschau Castle. A day in Munich provides further exploration of its stunning Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque churches, vibrant markets, and historical sites.
