Deo Gratias Films, in association with the International Institute for Culture, is producing Mother Overbrook, a feature length documentary about Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. The seminary grounds are sacred, unlike any other place in the nation! Five popes and three canonized saints have visited seminary. St. Charles is not significant because popes and saints have visited; rather popes and saints have visited the seminary because of its significance. The importance of St. Charles cannot be understated. This film will preserve the legacy and introduce the future of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. As it transitions from its home of over 150 years, the film uses archival footage, interviews, and stunning visuals to celebrate its role in forming thousands of priests and inspiring generations of Catholics worldwide. One of the 20th century’s greatest Catholic philosophers, Pieper warned us about the dangers of a dehumanizing, work-obsessed culture. He passionately defended the importance of leisure, wonder, and true human flourishing – without which some of the greatest creations and ingenuity of mankind would never have been achieved.
This compelling documentary produced by Robert Duncan brings Pieper’s life and ideas to the screen through a rich blend of re-enactments, interviews with scholars, archival footage, and thoughtful commentaries. His conceptualizations on the way Pieper would view AI today offer a profound and thought-provoking reflection on how the famed philosopher’s admonitions still speak directly to our modern world.
The International Institute for Culture is proud to have helped co-produce this documentary, which features interviews with Dr. John Haas, as well as his historic final video interview with Josef Pieper from the 1990s. Dr. Haas’s granddaughter, Isabel Wallacavage, portrays Pieper’s wife, and his son, Matthew A. Haas, served as Associate Producer for the project.
