EVENT DESCRIPTION:
John Manderscheid is a Canadian human rights attorney and legal historian. He earned his BA and MA in History from the University of Alberta in Canada. He went on to earn his LLB and LLM in International Human Rights Law from Queen Mary University of London, where he achieved academic honours, ultimately graduating First Class at the top of his LLM program discipline. John is passionate about promoting the protection of human rights in both a global and domestic context. John is an Ivy Hall alumnus, having taken part in the 2015 Latin Summer Program under the late Dr. Stephen Cordova. This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Cordova. In this public lecture, John will examine the immortal story of St. Thomas More, the famed Lord Chancellor, lawyer and advisor of King Henry VIII. More's struggle with the King tested his conscience and faith, and marked one of the most famous chapters in English legal history. Filled with striking lessons about religion and the law, More’s story challenges how we think about our rights and the role of government in our own time with the separation of church and state. Reception to follow.
