"Pythagoras, Bach and Universal Harmony in the Great B-Minor Mass" is the fifth lecture in our Sunday series. 
 
Lorenzo Candelaria (PhD Yale University) is a historian of Western European and American art musics. His research focuses on Catholic music cultures in Spain, Mexico and in the American Southwest. He is also engaged in projects that explore intersections between music and the physical sciences. Dr. Candelaria is an accomplished violinist and violist, an active lecturer, and author. Recent books include American Music: A Panorama (with Daniel Kingman) and The Rosary Cantoral: Ritual and Social Design in a Chantbook from Early Renaissance Toledo. His current book project, Music in Early Mexican Catholicism, is under contract with the University of Rochester Press (Eastman Studies in Music).  
 
Prior to arriving at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2013, Dr. Candelaria served on the musicology faculty of the University of Texas at Austin for twelve years and was a visiting faculty member in ethnomusicology at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. His book, The Rosary Cantoral, received the American Musicological Society’s Robert M. Stevenson Award for its outstanding contribution to music scholarship and his research has been supported by prestigious awards including grants and fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, Mellon Foundation, Social Science Research Council, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  
 
There will be a brunch and the lecture following the 11:30 mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Brunch will begin at approximately 12:45 with the lecture beginning at 1:30.  
 
The suggested donation for the brunch and lecture is $15 per person and $35 per family.  
 
Babysitting will be available for children 10 and under for $1 per child.
