THE UNITY OF ASCENT: MUSICAL SUPPLICATION AND REDEMPTION IN EARLY MODERN VENICE

In the Beauty of Holiness: Music and the Transcendent
Dr. Sara Pecknold will be presenting "The Unity of Ascent: Musical Supplication and Redemption in Early Modern Venice" as the first lecture in our new Sunday series.
 Sara Pecknold holds a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology with a minor in Vocal Performance from The Catholic University of America. Dr. Pecknold has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the 2012 Irene Alm Memorial Prize for Student Research from the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, a 2013 Cosmos Scholars Grant, and the Jan LaRue Travel Fund Award from the American Musicological Society. She has taught early music history at George Washington University, as well as a graduate seminar in seventeenth-century sacred music at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. She is currently Clinical Assistant Professor of Musicology at The Catholic University of America. Her article, “Verdi and the Atoning Cost of Forgiveness” appeared in New Blackfriars journal in 2013, and she has contributed an essay on the music of the Innsbruck court to the forthcoming Companion to Music at the Habsburg Courts in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, edited by Dr. Andrew H. Weaver. Another forthcoming article, “Relics, Affections, and the Sounds of Procession: Barbara Strozzi, the Archduchess of Innsbruck, and St. Anthony of Padua” will appear in the Yale Journal of Music and Religion this year. Dr. Pecknold is a member of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, the American Chapter of the Heinrich Schütz Society, and the American Musicological Society. In March of this year, she appeared on BBC Radio Three as the musicological consultant for the Composer of the Week Series on the seventeenth-century Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi.
There will be a brunch and the lecture following the 11:30 mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Brunch will begin at approximately 12:45 with the lecture beginning at 2.
